U.S. launches first drone strike in Pakistan since election

By on Wednesday, May 29, 2013

The strike also coincided with the first session of the newly elected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.

(Web Desk) - A U.S. drone strike killed seven people in Pakistan's North Waziristan region on Wednesday, security officials said, the first such attack since a May 11 general election in which the use of the unmanned aircraft was a major issue.

U.S. President Barack Obama recently indicated he was scaling back the drone strike program, winning cautious approval from Pakistan, a key ally in the U.S. fight on militancy.

A Pakistani Foreign Ministry official condemned all such strikes.

"Any drone strike is against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan and we condemn it," the official, who declined to be identified, told Reuters.

Pakistani security officials and Pashtun tribesmen in the northwestern region said the drone fired two missiles that struck a mud-built house at Chashma village, 3 km (2 miles) east of Miranshah, the region's administrative town.

They said seven people were killed and four wounded. It was not immediately clear if the victims were the intended targets.

"Tribesmen started rescue work an hour after the attack and recovered seven bodies," said resident Bashir Dawar.

"The bodies were badly damaged and beyond recognition."

North Waziristan is on the Afghan border and has long been a stronghold of militants including Afghan Taliban and their al Qaeda and Pakistani Taliban allies.

Prime Minister-elect Nawaz Sharif said this month that drone strikes were a "challenge" to Pakistan's sovereignty.

"We will sit with our American friends and talk to them about this issue," he said.

Obama's announcement of scaling back drone strikes was widely welcomed by the people of North Waziristan, where drones armed with missiles have carried out the most strikes against militants over the past seven years, sometimes with heavy civilian casualties.

The strike also coincided with the first session of the newly elected provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the former Northwest Frontier Province.

Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party won most seats in the assembly and has been very critical of drone strikes in the region.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said last week it appreciated Obama's acknowledgement that force alone did not work, adding that the root causes of terrorism had to be addressed.

"On the use of drone strikes, the government of Pakistan has consistently maintained that (they) are counter-productive, entail loss of innocent civilian lives, have human rights and humanitarian implications and violate the principles of national sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law," it said.

Obama defends drone strikes

By on Friday, May 24, 2013

President Barack Obama on Thursday revealed clearer guidelines for the use of deadly drone strikes.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Declaring America at a ‘‘crossroads’’ in the fight against terrorism, President Barack Obama on Thursday revealed clearer guidelines for the use of deadly drone strikes, including more control by the US military, while leaving key details of the controversial program secret.

The guidance includes requirements that a target must pose a continuing "imminent" threat to Americans, and says lethal action can be used only if a suspect cannot feasibly be captured, and there is a legal basis for acting.

In a major foreign policy speech after some two weeks of dealing with domestic scandals, Obama underlined his support for press freedoms in the face of recent criticism of his administration s recent probes to stop leaks of classified information.

Under a new presidential guidance signed recently, the Defense Department will take the lead in launching drones, as opposed to the current practice of the CIA taking charge.

The president also announced a renewed push to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba, including lifting a moratorium on prisoner transfers to Yemen. However, shutting the prison will still require help from Republicans reluctant to back Obama’s call to move some detainees to US prisons and try them in civilian courts.

Obama framed his address as an attempt to redefine the nature and scope of terror threats facing the US, noting the weakening of al-Qaida and the impending end of the US war in Afghanistan.

‘‘Neither I, nor any president, can promise the total defeat of terror,’’ Obama said in remarks at the National Defense University. ‘‘What we can do, what we must do, is dismantle networks that pose a direct danger, and make it less likely for new groups to gain a foothold, all while maintaining the freedoms and ideals that we defend.’

Ishq Ki Maa Ki: Shabana declares war on Vulgar sexualisation

Friday, May 17, 2013 12:29 IST
By Subhash K Jha , Santa Banta News
A number entitled Ishq ki maa ki so infuriated Shabana Azmi that she called up an FM channel playing the song.

Says a source, `Ishq ki maa ki was playing on a FM channel. When Shabanaji heard the number she immediately called up the radio jockey and demanded to know why such a song was being played. She also tweeted angrily against the song and the lyricist. `

Shabana's tweet which invited a lot of responses read, `I cannot believe the song Ishq ki maa ki has been written by a woman Pallavi Mishra. Revolting shameful disgusting and condemnable. `

Hate-tweets against Pallavi Mishra including some comparing her to Honey Singh were posted.

Tragically the song that offended Shabana is not written by Pallavi but Amit Kasaria who has written the song and directed the film I Don't Luv You which contains the song.

Kasaria stands up stoutly against Shabana's tirade.

Says Amit, `I have the highest regard for Shabanaji. She doesn't seem to know that I wrote the song that has offended her. And I wonder why it has offended her!I am a young and new filmmaker, so I am an easy target.

Vulnerable sections of people are easy scapegoats to justify moral attitudes. My song is not the least offensive. I'd say Bhaag DK bhaag and Teri keh ke lunga are the songs she should be targeting. `

Indian bowler Sreesanth, two others arrested for spot-fixing

By on Thursday, May 16, 2013

The Rajasthan Royals IPL franchise is co-owned by Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty.

(Web Desk) - In a sensational development, Indian paceman S Sreesanth and two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested by the Delhi police on the charges of spot fixing in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

The special cell of the Delhi police arrested Sreesanth from his friend's place in Mumbai while the other two cricketers were arrested last night from the team hotel at Nariman Point for their alleged role in spot fixing.

The arrest took place immediately after the players returned to their team hotel, following their match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede stadium. The hosts won by 14 runs. The Delhi police source said that these players were under the scanner for their role in spot fixing in some of the earlier IPL match although they did not elaborate which matches were under scrutiny.

The police have also arrested seven bookies in Mumbai and three bookies in Delhi in connection with the same case. They are looking for two more bookies in Delhi. The development comes as a shock for the IPL authorities who have time and again grappled with controversies and scandals ever since the league was launched in 2008.

Latest vote count confirms Nawaz's victory

By on Tuesday, May 14, 2013

PML-N won 123 of the 269 directly elected national assembly seats.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - The final vote count from weekend s nationwide elections in Pakistan on Tuesday confirmed a big win for former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif s party.

The figures released by the Election Commission of Pakistan show Sharif s Pakistan Muslim League-N party will likely get a majority in the national assembly, setting him up to be prime minister for the third time.

PML-N won 123 of the 269 directly elected national assembly seats, the commission said.

There are 272 directly-elected seats in the lower house of parliament, but races for three seats were not held because a candidate had died. A new vote will be scheduled for those seats after alternative names are proposed.

Independent candidates who normally join the party that forms the government won 25 seats. The combination would give Sharif s party more than the 137 directly elected seats they need to have a majority.

There are an additional 70 seats for women and minorities that are apportioned to the parties based on how well they do in the general election.

The outgoing ruling Pakistan People s Party won 31 seats. The party was battered by allegations of corruption and complaints that it did nothing to address power blackouts and inflation. Almost all of the seats that it did win were in the party s stronghold of Sindh province.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party led by former cricket star Imran Khan won 26 seats, which is a huge improvement for a party that boycotted the 2008 election and only claimed one seat in the 2002 vote.

Imran Khan s supporters have protested the vote as unfair, Khan has claimed vote-rigging in the port city of Karachi and in Punjab province. Many of the young people who have come out to vote for Khan have also taken to the streets in recent days in protests in Karachi and Islamabad calling for recounts and new elections in many areas.

But many election observers who monitored the vote have said it was relatively fair.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said they did not find any evidence of systematic rigging and called on all parties to accept the vote.

The Free and Fair Election Network, a Pakistani monitoring group with thousands of observers, has described the balloting in Punjab as "relatively fair."

"The elections were held in a free and fair manner," said, Election commission spokesman Khursheed Alam, adding the commission was examining complaints it received.

ATC extends Musharraf's judicial remand till May 28

By on Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Musharraf did not appear before court due to security reasons.

(Web Desk) - Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Tuesday extended the judicial remand of former president Pervez Musharraf in Benazir Bhutto murder case till May 28.

Musharraf was not presented before the judge for today s hearing due to security reasons.

The court also put off hearing a bail application by Musharraf until May 20, prosecutor Ch Azhar said.

He said, "the court extended Musharraf s judicial remand until May 28 when it hears the case again," adding that the adjournment came after Musharraf s lawyer Salman Safdar could not attend the hearing.

This was the first hearing after the main state prosecutor handling Bhutto s 2007 murder and the 2008 Mumbai attacks, Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali, was shot dead in Islamabad en route to court on May 3.

During case proceeding, Chaudhry Azhar blamed caretaker interior minister for Ch Zulfiqar s assassination.

Though Musharraf was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days, the 69-year-old former military ruler will continue to be restricted to his plush farmhouse at Chak Shahzad on the outskirts of Islamabad, which has been declared a "sub-jail".

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated by a suicide bomber after addressing an election rally in Rawalpindi in December 2007.

Musharraf was formally arrested by the FIA on April 25 after the anti-terrorism court directed investigators to include him in the probe into the assassination. He has been accused of failing to provide adequate security to Bhutto after she returned to Pakistan from self-exile.

He was also declared a fugitive by the anti-terrorism court after he refused to cooperate with investigators. He is facing several other criminal cases.

Lawyers have petitioned the Supreme Court to put him on trial for treason for imposing emergency rule in 2007 and he is also facing charges over the killing of Baloch leader Akbar Bugti in a 2006 military operation.

Musharraf's party wins seat from Chitral

By on Monday, May 13, 2013

Iftikhar Uddin won Chitral's only seat in the national assembly.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Supporters of Pakistan s former military ruler Pervez Musharraf won two seats in the northwestern district of Chitral after flouting a party boycott of landmark elections, official results showed Monday.

The Pakistan election commission announced on its website that Iftikhar Uddin won Chitral s only seat in the national assembly and Haji Ghulam Muhammad gained its sole seat in the provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Both contested on behalf of the All Pakistan League Party (APML), which Musharraf founded in exile before he returned home and was put under house arrest, barred from contesting the elections in person.

He faces the possibility of going on trial for treason and is wanted in three other cases dating back to his 1999-2008 rule.

The former leader took power in a coup that deposed then prime minister Nawaz Sharif, now set to return to power after winning a commanding victory in the polls.

The APML announced on May 3 that it was boycotting the election, but its candidates in Chitral refused to pull out.

APML official Muhammad Amjad welcomed the wins.

"It proves the love of people for Musharraf," Amjad said.

Musharraf had applied to contest four seats for the national assembly, including one from Chitral, but was barred from standing by the courts over charges of conspiracy to murder and violating the constitution.

Amjad said that Iftikhar Uddin inherited the party ticket in Chitral as a result.

Syeda Afshan Adil, one of Musharraf s lawyers, told AFP that party leaders in Chitral protested against the boycott on the grounds that the retired general is popular in the mountain region, partly for building a key tunnel that has eased travel.

Musharraf returned to Pakistan in March after four years of self-imposed exile, promising to "save" the country from militancy and economic collapse.

But he is now under house arrest over the murder of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto in 2007 and for sacking judges in the same year, during which he imposed emergency rule.

In addition he faces a third legal case over the 2006 death of a Baluch rebel leader and has been threatened with death by the Taliban.

KSE-100 Index crosses historic 20,000 points

By on Monday, May 13, 2013

The KSE 100 index has risen to 322 points reaching 20179 level at first business day after polls.

KARACHI (Dunya News): Karachi stocks hit an all-time high on Monday following Nawaz Sharif s strong victory in landmark elections, which revived hopes the steel tycoon s pro-business agenda could spark an economic revival.

The benchmark index of top 100 shares rose 1.6 percent to 20,232 points in early trade, surpassing the 20,000 mark for the first time, after Sharif s Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) emerged with a clear lead over its rivals.

The election results defied analysts  predictions of a weak parliament as the PML-N looked able to form a government without the help of its traditional rival the Pakistan People s Party and new challenger Imran Khan s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf.

"We were fearing a hung parliament and thus a weaker and unstable government would come into power as a result of the elections," said Mohammad Sohail, the chief of Topline Securities, a leading brokerage house in Karachi.

Investors are hopeful of an economic revival under Sharif, whose pro-business policies earned him a good reputation among traders and industrialists during his two previous tenures in the 1990s.

"He liberalised the economy by launching a privatisation programme and liberalised the financial sector allowing foreign investors to step into Pakistani capital markets," Sohail said.

Though his privatisation agenda was never fully implemented, Sharif has promised in early interviews to pick up where he left off.
