At least 33 persons died and several others injured after earthquake in Awaran area of Balochistan.

QUETTA (Dunya News / AFP) - A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said, with tremors felt as far away as the Indian capital New Delhi.
According to Dunya News, earthquake tremors were felt in several cities of Balochistan and Sindh including Karachi Hyderabad, Khuzdar, and Kalat.
At least 33 people died and several others injured in Awaran area while three persons including a woman were killed as a house collapsed after the earthquake in Turbat area of Balochistan.
The earthquake tremors were felt for two minutes while people left their houses and offices due to fear of any loss.
The quake struck at 4:29 pm around 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of the city of Khuzdar in Balochistan province, at a depth of 15 kilometres.
USGS originally measured the earthquake at magnitude 7.4 and 29 kilometres deep but later revised their figure. Pakistan s meteorological office gave the magnitude as 7.7.
The area of the epicentre is sparsely populated, but the USGS issued a red alert for the quake, warning that heavy casualties were likely, based on past data.
A senior Pakistani meteorologist, Muhammad Riaz, told Dunya News it was a "major" earthquake and "heavy destruction" was likely.
Minor tremors were felt as far away as New Delhi, while office workers in the city of Ahmedabad near the border with Pakistan ran out of buildings and into the street.
Mumtaz Baloch, senior local administration official in Awaran district, 350 kilometres southwest of Quetta, told AFP: "There are reports of houses being collapsed in the district due to earthquake."
"We also have initial information about injuries to people as a result of the collapse of houses but there are no reports of any deaths."
"We have dispatched our teams to the affected area to ascertain the losses."
In April a 7.8-magnitude quake centred in southeast Iran, close to the border with Baluchistan, killed 41 people and affected more than 12,000 on the Pakistan side of the border.
People working in offices Karachi rushed out of their building and sat on the footpaths along the roads or stood away from the buildings.
"My work table jerked a bit and again and I impulsively rushed outside," Noor Jabeen, a 28-year woman working for an insurance company said while breathing heavily.
"It was not so intense but it was terrible," said Owais Khan, who works for a provincial government office.
"Whenever I feel jolts it reminds me of the 2005 earthquake in Kashmir," said Amjad Ali, 45, IT official standing on the road said.
A 7.6 magnitude quake in 2005 centred in Kashmir, killed at least 73,000 people and left several million homeless in one of the worst natural disasters to hit Pakistan.

Typhoon Usagi veers from Hong Kong, hits China

The typhoon wreaked havoc on airport schedules in Hong Kong, nearby Macau and mainland China.

HONG KONG (AP) - The year's most powerful typhoon slammed into southern China on Sunday evening, forcing hundreds of flight cancellations, shutting down shipping and putting a nuclear power plant on alert after pummeling parts of the Philippines and Taiwan with heavy rains and fierce winds.
Typhoon Usagi veered away from Hong Kong at the last minute and made landfall northeast of the former British colony. Forecasters had warned earlier that it posed a "severe threat" to the southern Chinese city.
Usagi, Japanese for rabbit, was classified as a severe typhoon, packing sustained winds of 175 kilometers (109 miles) per hour, with gusts of up to 213 kph (132 mph).
The storm was downgraded from a super typhoon on Saturday, with its sustained winds falling below 241 kilometers (150 miles) per hour, as it passed through the Luzon Strait separating the Philippines and Taiwan, likely sparing residents in both places from the most destructive winds near its eye.
In the Philippines, Usagi left at least two people dead and two others missing, while in Taiwan nine people were hurt by falling trees on Kinmen island off China's coast.
The typhoon landed near the city of Shanwei in the Chinese province of Guangdong, about 140 kilometers (87 miles) northeast of Hong Kong, and was moving west-northwest at 22 kph (14 mph), the Hong Kong Observatory said. It was expected to skirt about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Hong Kong overnight.
Ferry services between Hong Kong and nearby Macau and outlying islands were suspended as the observatory raised the No. 8 storm warning signal, the third highest on a five-point scale. It reported winds as strong as 68 kph (42 mph) and warned that a storm surge and heavy rains could cause flooding in low-lying areas.
Police in Shanwei ordered more than 8,000 fishing boats to return to port and more than 1,200 residents were taken to temporary shelters, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.
The typhoon wreaked havoc on airport schedules in Hong Kong, nearby Macau and mainland China, upsetting travel plans for many passengers who were returning home at the end of the three-day mid-autumn festival long weekend.
Hong Kong International Airport said 370 arriving and departing flights were canceled and another 64 delayed. Two of Hong Kong's biggest airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair, canceled flights to and from the city's airport starting at 6 p.m. Sunday, with plans to resume operations Monday if conditions permit.
Beijing-based Air China scrubbed 148 flights to and from Hong Kong, Macau and five nearby mainland cities. China Southern Airlines, based in Guangzhou, canceled all flights to and from Hong Kong and three mainland airports, Xinhua said.
Fujian province suspended shipping between mainland China and Taiwan, the news agency said.
Authorities in Guangdong initiated an emergency response plan for the province's nuclear power plants as Usagi approached, ordering four of six reactors at the Daya Bay nuclear power station northeast of Hong Kong to operate at a reduced load, Xinhua said. Outdoor work at two other nuclear power plants under construction in the province was suspended.
In Taiwan, more than 3,300 people were evacuated from flood-prone areas and mountainous regions. The storm also caused a landslide that buried a rail line on Taiwan's southeast coast, but rail services were restored by Sunday morning.
Another landslide late Saturday in the southeastern hot springs resort village of Chihpen sent mud and rocks crashing through the ground floor of a resort spa, forcing the evacuation of frightened guests. The Chihpen River breached its levies upriver, turning the village's main street into a rock-strewn stream, flooding homes and damaging vehicles.
In the Philippines, a 50-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman drowned when a passenger boat capsized in rough waters off northeastern Aurora province, the Office of Civil Defense said Saturday. Two other people were missing in the incident, while the remaining nine passengers and crew were rescued.
The typhoon set off landslides, flooded parts of six Philippine provinces and affected nearly 20,000 people, but disaster-response officials did not immediately report additional casualties.

Bizarre but True: Why Hrithik is not part of Shekhar Kapur`s `Paani`

Friday, September 20, 2013 13:35 IST
Sources say Hrithik Roshan and the producers of Shekhar Kapur's much-delayed project 'Paani' parted ways over a pow-wow on profit sharing

With buzz about Sushant Singh Rajput being roped in to play the lead role in Shekhar Kapur's much-delayed Paani, one can't help but wonder why Hrithik Roshan, who apparently had been signed for the film initially, lost out on the opportunity to work with the celebrated director.

Insiders say that it could have something to do with the production house's unwillingness to part with their profit-share with the actor. One may recall how Hrithik had apparently announced during the Marrakech International Film Festival in April this year that he was part of the director's grand project.

Says a source, `Hrithik was offered the film but the production house, Yash Raj Films, was not okay to give him a profit-share in the film which led to both the actor and the production house to part ways.`

A friend of the star comments, `Paani has been in the making for a very long time and we hope the film finally goes on floor.` The official spokesperson of the production house rubbishes the buzz that Hrithik was ever approached for the film, `It is completely untrue.` Hrithik remained unavailable for comment.

The other version
An excerpt from Shekhar Kapur's blog however paints a very different picture:

Shekhar Kapur: `Which Director in his right mind would ever give up a chance to work with Hrithik Roshan? He has been one of the most exciting actors in Hindi Cinema for a long time. And a huge star to boot. And years ago, as I sat down to write Paani, I had one image in mind to play the male lead. Hrithik Roshan.

The character I described in the script was completely Hrithik. His manner, his inner world, his conflicts .. were all Hrithik. I sat with AR Rahman and as we composed music together, I always would ask him to imagine Hrithik.

But then the years passed. I got involved with Hollywood. Other projects ensnared me away from the project that was my deepest passion .. Paani. And as the years passed, and the script kept evolving.. changing. And Hrithik changed too... To what Hrithik is today. The Super Hero.

The man who is the protector, the man who can take on the world single handedly. The man who knows he can take on the world singlehandedly. Hrithik evolved into Krish. And I realized I had left it too late.... So while I lost the chance to cast Hrithik in Paani, I hope that he would still agree to be in one of my next films...` (sic)

Petitioners have challenged government of Punjab regarding local bodies poll on non-party bases.

LAHORE (Dunya News) Lahore High Court has accepted the petitions filed by the PPP and PTI against non-party Local Bodies elections and accordingly issues notices to Attorney General, Advocate General and government of the Punjab for November 25.
When Chief Justice Umer Ata Bandial resumed hearing of the case, PPP leader Mian Manzoor Watto was also present in the court room.
The lawyers on the part of their clients, PPP and PTI, took the stance that local bodies elections in three provinces were being held on party basis while Punjab was insisting on holding elections on non-party basis which is diametrically against the Article 140-A of the Constitution.
The lawyers further argued that such step of the Punjab government would promote corruption in the society rather than resolving the issues faced by masses.
The Chief Justice while termed the petition maintainable issued notices to Attorney General, Advocate General and government of the Punjab in this regard.

Scotland Yard issues fresh appeal in Imran Farooq murder case

By on Monday, September 16, 2013

LONDON (Web Desk) The Metropolitan Police Service London (MPS) also known as Scotland Yard issued a fresh appeal for assistance in the Imran Farooq murder investigation on Monday.
On the third death anniversary of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement s leader, the police appealed again to the people to come forward with any information that may lead to the identification, arrest and prosecution of those involved in the murder and has offered a reward of up to £20,000 in this regard.
Dr Farooq was on his way home from work when he was attacked outside his home in Green Lane, Edgware, London, shortly before 17:30hrs on Thursday 16 September 2010.
Dr Farooq, 50, died as a result of multiple stab wounds and blunt trauma to the head. A five and a half inch-bladed kitchen knife and a house brick used in the attack were recovered at the scene.
Detectives from the Met Police Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) who are investigating his murder are committed to finding those responsible. To date they have spoken to 4,076 people, reviewed 6,350 documents and followed up 2,114 lines of inquiry in order to bring his killers to justice.
This remains an ongoing investigation with a number of lines of inquiry being actively pursued.
It is thought that his murder would have required careful planning and help from other people, some of whom may have provided assistance or information unwittingly.
Detectives believe that Dr Farooq was about to launch a new independent political career before his death and this remains a key line of inquiry in this investigation.
Police know that in July 2010, Dr Farooq set up a Facebook profile and amassed a large number of contacts through this social network. However, we retain an open mind as to his murder.
On 24 June this year, officers arrested a 52-year-old man on suspicion of conspiracy to murder at Heathrow after landing at the airport on a flight from Canada. He was taken to a west London police station and later released under bail to return to a police station at a date later in September.

Biometric Re-Verification of SIMs can Save Pakistan Billions of Dollars and Tons of Crimes

By on Thursday, September 12, 2013

Fool-proof re-verification of cellular subscribers will save telecom companies, Universal Service and Government of Pakistan around 88 million dollars a month or 1.05 billion dollars a year by curbing grey international incoming traffic. In addition the re-verification will help seizing of tons of social crimes that are causing irreparable damage to society and the nation.
This is only possible if re-verification of entire cellular base of the country is carried out in a fool-proof manner, and without any leakages or flaws (probably the body responsible for development of system will have to keep continuous eye on loopholes).
It can be biometric re-verification, where each and every cell user will have to record his/her thumb impression to be able to use cellular services, or any other method that should cent percent guarantee the rightful ownership of each and every cell phone user.
As per estimates, there are around 1 billion illegal international minutes per month landing into Pakistan compared to 500 million legal traffic minutes per month, causing telcos a loss of around 63 million dollars a month plus a 25 million dollar per month loss to Universal Service Fund.
It merits mentioning here that each international incoming minute earns the telecom operators USD 0.0625 while another USD 0.029 is saved for Universal Service Fund.
Clearly a lot of revenue for government can also be saved through taxing this income.
It is no secret that entire illegal international telephony is routed through illegal and unregistered SIMs, which will become impossible if each and every SIM is tied with a human being through a bio-metric re-verification.
That is, once all the SIMs are registered to recognizable and traceable owners, there won’t be a way to route international incoming voice traffic to local networks.
Not only this, countless number of social crimes such as wrong and anonymous calls, SPAM messages, spreading scandals via MMS and fake rumours via SMS, fake lotteries, phone thefts, extortion, kidnapping and various other usual and unusual crimes will be harder to commit or tracking them will require only a single click.
If you imagine each and every crime mentioned in above line has become nuisance for our society. Consider how wonderful it could be to get rid of these.
Importantly, if you notice, I didn’t mention terrorism; that’s because terrorists will switch their communication channels to avoid identity. They may start using Viber, Whatsapp or maybe their in-house – self developed — apps for communication.
Our government and law enforcement agencies will have to figure out other ways to tackle terrorism instead of blaming the telecom industry. But yes, re-verification is necessary to avoid so many other mis-deeds of our society.
P.S. In addition to re-verification of cellular users, Vfone, worldcall and all other wireless operators should also re-verify their customers to attain up-mentioned results.
