Bizarre but True: Why Hrithik is not part of Shekhar Kapur`s `Paani`

Friday, September 20, 2013 13:35 IST
Sources say Hrithik Roshan and the producers of Shekhar Kapur's much-delayed project 'Paani' parted ways over a pow-wow on profit sharing

With buzz about Sushant Singh Rajput being roped in to play the lead role in Shekhar Kapur's much-delayed Paani, one can't help but wonder why Hrithik Roshan, who apparently had been signed for the film initially, lost out on the opportunity to work with the celebrated director.

Insiders say that it could have something to do with the production house's unwillingness to part with their profit-share with the actor. One may recall how Hrithik had apparently announced during the Marrakech International Film Festival in April this year that he was part of the director's grand project.

Says a source, `Hrithik was offered the film but the production house, Yash Raj Films, was not okay to give him a profit-share in the film which led to both the actor and the production house to part ways.`

A friend of the star comments, `Paani has been in the making for a very long time and we hope the film finally goes on floor.` The official spokesperson of the production house rubbishes the buzz that Hrithik was ever approached for the film, `It is completely untrue.` Hrithik remained unavailable for comment.

The other version
An excerpt from Shekhar Kapur's blog however paints a very different picture:

Shekhar Kapur: `Which Director in his right mind would ever give up a chance to work with Hrithik Roshan? He has been one of the most exciting actors in Hindi Cinema for a long time. And a huge star to boot. And years ago, as I sat down to write Paani, I had one image in mind to play the male lead. Hrithik Roshan.

The character I described in the script was completely Hrithik. His manner, his inner world, his conflicts .. were all Hrithik. I sat with AR Rahman and as we composed music together, I always would ask him to imagine Hrithik.

But then the years passed. I got involved with Hollywood. Other projects ensnared me away from the project that was my deepest passion .. Paani. And as the years passed, and the script kept evolving.. changing. And Hrithik changed too... To what Hrithik is today. The Super Hero.

The man who is the protector, the man who can take on the world single handedly. The man who knows he can take on the world singlehandedly. Hrithik evolved into Krish. And I realized I had left it too late.... So while I lost the chance to cast Hrithik in Paani, I hope that he would still agree to be in one of my next films...` (sic)

For Priyanka change is the spice of life

After establishing her acting credentials, Priyanka Chopra is keen to take the world of music by storm

Coming a long way from being a Miss World to a much-admired actor, Priyanka Chopra has found another outlet for her penchant for creativity: singing.

The movie Fashion was a turning point in Priyanka's career. Shooting to further critical acclaim after her role as an autistic girl Jhilmil in Barfi and deranged serial killer/lover in 7 Khoon Maaf, Priyanka is now donning the acting and singing hats with elan.

Was Priyanka's decision to take up singing prompted by a desire to seek insurance against the future, especially in a milieu where heroines have a limited shelf-life, compared to heroes? No, as she once told the Forbes magazine: `My music is simply an extension of my creativity.`

Though not a professional music artiste, Priyanka Chopra started her singing career with Tollywood movies. She found the inspiration to take up singing in her late father, with whom she was deeply attached. Singing live on the reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Priyanka produced her first single album In My City, in September 2012, thus becoming the first Indian actor to make the big leap into the competitive world of pop music.

For her latest high-energy, infusion pop, dance track Exotic, Piggy Chops has teamed up with Pitbull, the famous rapper of America -- considered as the daddy of rock. Besides lending her mellifluous voice, the 30-year-old Indian beauty has looked really exotic in the album.

Recently, she caused massive fan frenzy in West Hollywood as she launched a celebrity milkshake The Exotic Shake, inspired by her album with Pitbull.

Interestingly, it was international musical sensation, Pitbull who gave Jennifer Lopez her top three hits on the US charts in the last decade. Though, it must be acknowledged that Exotic is not that much of a success to top the US charts.

Nevertheless, Priyanka has chosen to straddle the two worlds of acting and singing and encounter all the challenges that the sailing in two boats entails. After making her mark as a pop diva, the day is not far when she does the playback for Bollywood songs. Best wishes from Santa Banta family, Piggy Chops

SRK enthralls fans in Kolkata

Sunday, July 28, 2013 13:27 IST
By Santa Banta News
The actor visited the city for promotions of his upcoming film 'Chennai Expressed and was over whelmed by the response of fans. He speaks about women's safety, the need to educate children to respect women, surrogacy and more...

Overwhelmed by the turnout while promoting his forthcoming movie 'Chennai Express', Shah Rukh Khan gushed about not wanting to leave his "favourite city".

"I love you Kolkata... I mean this is extremely overwhelming. I tour the whole country for my films but when I come here, you need to pass a law here that you adopt me and keep me here. I don't want to go from here," he said at an event.

Thousands of fans braved the monsoons to get a glimpse of the Badshaah of Bollywood as strains of Shah Rukh's hits like 'Chaiyyan Chaiyyan' revved up the energy level of the crowd.

As part-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, the actor has a huge following in the city.

"Thank you for supporting the cricket team," said Shah Rukh as he elapsed in to the team's anthem 'Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo'.

As King Khan waved and threw bouquets amid the throng, there was a mad scramble to pick up the flowers, prompting SRK to say "be careful, don't fight."

A star-struck crowd ogled at the star, as he enlivened legions of fans by dancing to 'Chennai Express' hit number 'One two three four!', dressed in a dark grey shirt and black vest with the customary hat that he dons in the movie.

Praising city-based dance group Crescendo for their performance, Shah Rukh stated that the youngsters performed "even better" than what the actor did in the film.

He also mesmerised the audience by repeating popular dialogues from his films 'Devdas', 'Don 2', 'Om Shanti Om' among others.

Wooing denizens with the popular phrase from 'Chennai Express', "Dont underestimate the power of the common man", SRK jazzed up the atmosphere further by distributing hats among the spectators.

Defending Kolkata in the wake of the rising incidents of crime against women in the city, Shah Rukh said not only Kolkata, but the whole world had issues when it came to the safety of women.

Khan, who is the state's brand ambassador, came to his "favourite" city's rescue by pointing out that safety of women is a global concern, "This is very personal. You can't pick on a city because it's easiest to blame the system. The whole country, the whole world actually has issues as far as safety of women is concerned."

The star also stressed the need to teach children to respect women.

"We can always turn around and say that it's sad, but I think the younger people, and I feel I am young, we must change the concept of how we bring up our children at home. The thing is the mentality of not telling the boys how to be gentle, and good and respectful. So I have started doing that," Khan said.

"When I talk to my son about girls, I don't talk about girlfriends. I tell him, 'Don't break a girl's heart, treat it gently and there is no way that you can look at an atrocity done on a women and if you do that you will not be forgiven by your father and mother'. So we should start from there," Khan said.

Downplaying the issue of surrogacy and his new born, SRK cleared the air by stating, "I didn't do it to promote surrogacy in the country. I did it to have a baby. I don't know how to explain that."

Directed by Rohit Shetty, 'Chennai Express' is slated for an August 9 release. It stars Deepika Padukone as the lead actress.

Look for whom Salman is a lucky mascot?

Sunday, July 28, 2013 13:48 IST
By Santa Banta News
After "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", director Rajkumar Santoshi has once again roped in superstar Salman Khan for a cameo in his forthcoming film "Phata Poster Nikhla Hero". He says it's a mere co-incidence and not because he considers the actor his lucky mascot.

"I don't think like that. It was more a need of the script," Santoshi said here Friday at a press meet of the film.

"In that film ('Ajab...'), Katrina (Kaif) was a big fan of Salman and an incident happens where Salman comes in front of her. In this film, Shahid has been shown as a big fan of film stars, particularly Salman, one of the most happening stars today.

"So it is just a co-incidence, not because of the lucky mascot thing," he added.

However, Santoshi says if "Phata Poster Nikla Hero" works, then he will definitely start calling Salman his lucky mascot.

"I wish it happens, success repeats itself. Then third time I will definitely go to Salman saying that you are lucky for me, come in my film and do a scene," he said.

"Phata Poster Nikhla Hero" stars Shahid Kapoor in the lead besides Ileana D'Cruz. The film hits theatres Aug 23.

Amisha goes gaga over Shiamak`s style

Tuesday, June 04, 2013 13:04 IST
Actress Ameesha Patel is so impressed with choreographer Shiamak Davar and his style of dancing that she calls him the "pioneer of new dance forms"

"Shiamak (Davar)ji is a pioneer of new dance forms. Earlier, dance uses to be typical Bollywood, but it is Shiamak, who has brought the modern dance forms mixed with filminess," Ameesha said here at an event organised by Shiamak where her "Shortcut Romeo" co-sar Neil Nitin Mukesh was also present.

The two were there to promote Susi Ganeshan directed thriller "Shortcut Romeo".

"He is the one who brought the acceptability that we can also do something different, can also compete with Hollywood," added Ameesha, who had last year performed with the choreographer at Apsara Awards.

Known for contemporary style of dancing, Shiamak has choreographed dance sequences in movies like "Taal", "Kisna", "Bunty Aur Babli" and "Dil To Pagal Hai".

In fact, Shiamak is credited to be the first Indian to popularise contemporary jazz and western forms of dances in the country through his school SDIPA (Shiamak Davar Institute for the Performing Arts).

Concluding, she said: "Year after year, Shiamakji improves himself. He has great energy, there is never any sign of tiredness over his face, no lack of enthusiasm. He keeps encouraging."

Neil, who has been a student of Shiamak's, too, heaped praises on the choreographer.

He said that he is able to dance, "because of one man and that is Shiamak Davar," Neil, who has showed his moves in the songs like "Aa Dekhen Zara" and now in "Shortcut Romeo".

"There is a beautiful thing that he has probably taught his students - keep a smile on your face because that's a curve line that puts everything straight," added the 31-year-old.

Jiah Khan suicide case: Aditya Pancholi`s son to be probed

Tuesday, June 04, 2013 15:14 IST
By Santa Banta News
Taking an aggressive stance in actress Jiah Khan's alleged suicide case, now Mumbai Police is planning to interrogate actor Aditya Pancholi's son Sooraj, with whom Jiah was reportedly going around.

If reports are to be believed then Sooraj and Jiah had been good friends and were often seen hanging out at parties together.

Even the apprehension of Jiah's mother, about her slipping into depression are confirmed by some of the industry insiders but holding a totally different predisposition to the whole issue.

Some of the industry insiders on the condition of anonymity have revealed that, Jiah actually was mentally disturbed ever since, Sooraj called off his association with Jiah. And primarily, it was their break up which disturbed the actress. To top it was her continuous struggle to get any decent work.

Inspite of being Aditya Pancholi's son, Sooraj's claim to fame was his being under tutelage of a superstar of Bollywood. He was also tipped to be launched by this superstar.

If sources from Mumbai Police department are to be believed, then Jiah's last communication on phone was with Sooraj!

Ishq Ki Maa Ki: Shabana declares war on Vulgar sexualisation

Friday, May 17, 2013 12:29 IST
By Subhash K Jha , Santa Banta News
A number entitled Ishq ki maa ki so infuriated Shabana Azmi that she called up an FM channel playing the song.

Says a source, `Ishq ki maa ki was playing on a FM channel. When Shabanaji heard the number she immediately called up the radio jockey and demanded to know why such a song was being played. She also tweeted angrily against the song and the lyricist. `

Shabana's tweet which invited a lot of responses read, `I cannot believe the song Ishq ki maa ki has been written by a woman Pallavi Mishra. Revolting shameful disgusting and condemnable. `

Hate-tweets against Pallavi Mishra including some comparing her to Honey Singh were posted.

Tragically the song that offended Shabana is not written by Pallavi but Amit Kasaria who has written the song and directed the film I Don't Luv You which contains the song.

Kasaria stands up stoutly against Shabana's tirade.

Says Amit, `I have the highest regard for Shabanaji. She doesn't seem to know that I wrote the song that has offended her. And I wonder why it has offended her!I am a young and new filmmaker, so I am an easy target.

Vulnerable sections of people are easy scapegoats to justify moral attitudes. My song is not the least offensive. I'd say Bhaag DK bhaag and Teri keh ke lunga are the songs she should be targeting. `

Movie Review: Watch ‘Ek Thi Daayan’ for Emraan, Konkona & Kalki

By on Sunday, April 21, 2013

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Huma Qureshi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kalki Koechlin, Pawan Malhotra
Directed by: Kannan Iyer
Review by: Faisal Saif
Ratings: * * 1/2
Ek Thi Daayan makes us take a walk in the world of Black Magic, Myths, Witches and of course the stories which were told to us by our parents or grand parents during our childhood.
They used to tell us these stories when we were very mischievous, out of control and refused to sleep during our bed-time. Do ghosts, spirits, witches exist? What is black magic? Some might believe it, Some may not.
The tells the story of Bobo (Emraan Hashmi) who is India’s leading magician. But unknown to even his girlfriend Tamara (Huma Qureshi), Bobo’s life is falling apart. His regular hallucinations leave him with no option but to seek psychiatric help.
Bobo had a dark and spooky childhood past.

A terrifying story about his childhood surfaces involving a powerful with called Daayan (Konkona Sen Sharma). She has not only destroyed his family, but also promised to return to haunt Bobo. They say her life lived in her long hair! Bobo chooses to ignore it and move on with his life. Bobo is having a wonderful love-life and amazing career. Enters the gorgeous and breath-taking Lisa Dutt (Kalki Koechlin). Bobo is convinced that she is the same Daayan. And this time she is back to take everything what she left behind earlier.

Emraan Hashmi rocked as usual, Despite of the presence of three other female actresses. The actor only grows in every film with his wonderful performance. But the film totally belongs to both Daayan’s. Konkona Sen Sharma is just amazing and superb. This is her first film in Horror genre, And she is terrific. Kalki Koechlin looked perfect in her character with the right kind of attitude. The only irritating actress in the movie was Huma Qureshi.
Somehow, The actress looked very over-confident in her scenes. Pawan Malhotra, Rajatava Dutta (The one who played Emraan’s doctor) were remarkable.

Director Kannan Iyer chose a wonderful script but somehow it did not looked convincing on the screen. There were lot of confusions with Kalki Koechlin’s character towards the climax. The film is too long after the Interval point. A Film maker looses his battle when the viewers starts to feel when will this film gets over! This is what exactly happens when Ek Thi Daayan proceeds with it’s second half.

On the Musical side, The songs of the film are good. Especially, Yaaram, Kaali Kaali and Main Lautungi sound out of this world. Background score of the movie too deserves special mention. It helps the spooky atmosphere. The camera-work of the film is of first rate.

Ek Thi Daayan only and only works for the superb performances of Emraan Hashmi, Konkona Sen Sharma and Kalki Koechlin. I have my own doubts if the film will become a Cult or a Classic. The film may identify with viewers but the confused second half will make the viewing uneasy.

Indian SC gives Sanjay Dutt four more weeks to surrender

By on Wednesday, April 17, 2013

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted Sanjay Dutt four more weeks to surrender and undergo his remaining prison term of 42 months in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
The apex court granted partial relief to the actor on "humanitarian" grounds, a day before the deadline for his surrender ended on April 18.
Sanjay Dutt had sought a six-month extension to allow him to complete shooting of seven films worth Rs.278 crore.
"Considering the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case and reasons stated in the petition, we are not inclined to extend the time by six months. However, we extend the time by four weeks from tomorrow. It is made clear that no further extension will be granted," a bench comprising justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan said.
The court said that the actor would not be entitled to any further extension of time hereafter.
The bench also noted in its order that senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Dutt, has agreed to the same that no further extension will be sought.
The CBI opposed the extension of time but was silenced by the court, which asked, why didn't the agency file an appeal against Dutt's acquittal from TADA charges by the trial court?
In its order on March 21, the apex court had upheld Dutt's conviction under the Arms Act for possessing illegal arms.
However, it had reduced his sentence from six to five years.
Sanjay Dutt has completed one-and-half years in jail and has to serve the remainder three-and-half years of his sentence.
