Army deployment underway in Karachi

KARACHI (Dunya News) - The deployment of Pakistan Army for maintaining law and order situation ahead of general elections is underway in Karachi.

The contingents left Malir Cantt base and will be deputed on different spots of the metropolitan where they will remain on high alert.

As many as 3,000 troops are being deployed in sensitive areas while twelve armoured vehicles would be used for patrolling the area.

Earlier, Election Commission had said that the personnel will guard the city and will be available as a ‘rapid response force’, while police, FC and Rangers will ensure security inside the polling stations during the elections.

Pakistan Army is deploying 70‚000 troops for election-related duties including provision of security and maintenance of law and order. This was stated by Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa while briefing newsmen in Rawalpindi on Thursday.

He said Armed Forces have been called upon to act in aid of the civil power under Article-245 of the Constitution.
