Sanaullah was attacked by fellow inmate, a former Indian army personnel, at Jammu Jail last week.
(Web Desk) - The body of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who succumbed to injuries in a Chandigarh hospital today (Thursday), will be handed over to Pakistan.
"We will hand over the body to Pakistan," Indian Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said.
Shinde said the Ministry of External Affairs is coordinating with the Pakistani authorities to complete the formalities to send back his body home. "Once the formalities are done, we will hand over the body," he said.
Indian media reported that a detailed post-mortem of Sanaullah, 52, would be done in Chandigarh and the travel arrangements would be made as per the request made by Pakistan.
Sanaullah was imprisoned in 1999 and was sentenced to life in prison in 2009 in Indian occupied Kashmir. The charges against him included murder and waging war against India.
He was beaten up in the prison in Jammu, the winter capital of Indian Kashmir, on Friday, a day after a convicted Indian terrorist Sarabjit Singh died after being bludgeoned with a brick by fellow inmates at a prison in Lahore, Pakistan.
Sanaullah was taken by air ambulance from Jammu to a bigger hospital in Chandigarh in the nearby state of Punjab.
A medical bulletin said Wednesday that his condition had become extremely critical as he suffered renal failure and also developed hypothermia.
There are 535 Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails and 272 Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails, according to India s External Affairs Ministry.
India was proposing a meeting of officials in both countries to "identify and put in place further measures to avoid such tragic incidents in the future," Syed Akbaruddin, the ministry spokesman, said last week.
