Peshawar High Court declares US drone strikes illegal.

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday declared the US drone strikes on Pakistani territory illegal and ordered the government to contact International War Crime Tribunal over the issue.

A two-member bench headed by PHC Chief Justice Dost Muhammad heard the case against CIA-led drone strike in Pakistan.

During case proceeding, Justice Dost Muhammad said drone attacks must equal war crimes.

He added that the attacks were violating human rights and were against the United Nations’ charter.

In its detailed judgement the court directed the government to take measures to stop drone strikes which it said were violating Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Pakistan’s government says the CIA drone campaign fuels anti-American sentiment in the country, and is counterproductive because of the collateral damage – civilian deaths – it causes.

US officials are of the view that such strikes by the remotely piloted aircraft are a highly effective way of attacking militants and are an important weapon in the war against militancy.

They maintain that the attacks are per US laws.
